Smoking in Public Places Banned in Kenya
The Government has banned tobacco smoking in public places.
Health minister Charity Ngilu yesterday said she had signed a Legal Notice outlawing smoking in public places and it was expected to come into effect in two weeks time.
“Kenya is a signatory to the framework convention on Tobacco Control Treaty. By banning smoking in public, the Government is fulfilling its obligations as a signatory to the treaty,” Ngilu said. The Legal Notice also puts restrictions on advertisements, importation, distribution and sale of tobacco and tobacco products.
Speaking during a press conference at her offices, Ngilu said it would be mandatory for those wishing to advertise to prominently display a warning on tobacco products.
Smoking has been prohibited in 14 areas classified as office and work places. The minister said smoking would only be allowed in specific designated areas.
