Wisconsin Rejects Smoking Law For Ban

MADISON, WI, United States (UPI) — Efforts by Wisconsin`s Tavern League to push through passage of a statewide smoking law will have to wait until next year.

The Wisconsin Senate voted 17-14 Wednesday to kill a measure that would have set one uniform smoking law in more than 1,800 communities and jurisdictions that have no smoking ordinances of their own, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Thursday.

Legislation for a statewide smoking law had already passed the state Assembly. The Senate bill was amended to allow 27 communities to keep their current smoking laws, but that was not enough to get lawmakers to support the controversial measure, the newspaper said.

A tavern industry official said bars in Madison, the state capital, had lost business since the city banned on smoking in bars and taverns last year.
