West Lafayette Smoking Ban in Public Places
Looks like smoking is going to banned everywhere! The US is heavily clamping down on smoking in public now. I’m so glad I’ve quit!
West Lafayette City Council passed its second proposed smoking ban 5-1 Monday night.
The vote was almost unanimous as two Republican councilors changed their vote from the ordinance’s first reading in March.
Matt Plomin, R-District 1, said he had received more than 150 e-mails from Purdue students in favor of the ordinance, which will ban smoking in all public places such as restaurants and bars, during the past few days.
Although opposed because it infringes on the rights of business owners, Plomin said the vote was not his choice, but that of the people he represents.
“I think the smoking ban is the most irresponsible thing our government can do,” he said. “But that’s not my choice and most of my constituents asked me to do this.
“So overwhelming support for this poured out and made me change my vote.”
Randy Truitt, R-At Large, said his change dealt with a personal decision between governmental interference versus public health.
“It’s still a tough decision. However, public health won,” he said.
“I only hope we can look back at this process with our good fortunes in hand.”
More than 80 people attended the meeting and the final vote was met with much applause among those who came in support of the ordinance.
